Leaving the Vincente Caldéron, Atlético's home since 1966, was tough. A much loved stadium located on the banks of the Manzanares River with so many memories for the Atléti faithful but it was showing its age and the time had come to move on to the magnificent Wanda Metropolitano, built at an estimated cost of €240m.
The stadium was originally named the Madrid Community Stadium and was built in 1994 for athletics with a capacity of 20,000. Atlético officially acquired the stadium in 2013 and built on the original single stand to increase the capacity to over 68,000. Atlético played their first La Liga game at the stadium against Málaga in 2017 and the Champions League Final was held here in 2019.
The stadium is a bit of a trek from the city centre but is truly a world class venue and well worth the visit. There's also not a great deal to do around the stadium so if you fancy a pre-match drink or just visit for a stadium tour,
it is best to stay centrally. The most convenient way to reach the stadium is Metro and from the city centre it'll take around an hour to get there.
A good option is to enjoy the surroundings of La Latina and then take line 5 to Pueblo Nuevo where you can change to Line 7 which goes to the station Estadio Metropolitano just outside the stadium.
